Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

I still think the solution should be two separate sizes: ZF4 and ZF4 plus/ultra. This would def cater to the various users.

And if anyone is willing to make the same thing in a million different screen sizes, it’s Samsung.

Not that I have any inside information but I believe we might see two Fold 4 models, a regular and a Plus, the latter being wider and thinner. Fujitsu is something of a specialist on making light and thin laptops and on Japanese tech sights there are rumors about some joint action with Samsung. Salt required.

Cool! :+1: I hope you’re right.

What’s with the new profile pic (avatar?) @Kumabjorn

For me, slightly taller and wider to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio ofnthe inne4 screen and also give me the S23 ultra camera lenses performance, S22 is almost yesterday when zFold4 will be announced

I can manage without the pen slot.

Looks like the GZF4 (lord, I hope they drop the Z) is getting some nice upgrades - better cameras and thinner, but still no confirmation of a siloed S Pen:

I think the new hinge pretty much implies there will be a silo. The present hinge takes up too much space. I would like it to be about 1 cm wider when folded so it is more usable without opening it.

Never thought about that but it would free up space!

It’s not looking good…

Bummer - you know the camera bump is still going to be big, so why not make one side thicker, get rid of the camera bump in favor of a pen slot?

"Because the OEM has usage data to prove "[INSERT PREDETERMINED OUTCOME HERE]. (There is a separate related rant about marketing types who engineer surveys to prevent or limit criticism.)

Seriously, I wonder what the data says about pens being ejected and used vs. the number of devices, maybe more importantly, the direction of sales after discontinuing silos on pen enabled models.

As a practical matter, there had to be more people screaming about the end of the headphone jack than about the loss of the pen silo. I am reminded of this article prophesying the end of all buttons and ports:

Maybe it’s just time to face the truth - they don’t much give a rat’s a$$ what we think or want - we are a miniscule minority that matters not.

That’s us. See this quote from Henry Ford circa 1909:

“There is a tendency to keep monkeying with styles and to spoil a good thing by changing it. The salesmen were insistent on increasing the line. They listened to the 5 percent, the special customers who could say what they wanted, and forgot all about the 95 percent, who just bought without making any fuss.”

And we aren’t even 5%…

So, not only is there yet another camera bump, but one for each lens. It doesn’t even look good.

Some designers need to be fired. I know smartphones are jewelry these days, but please stop.

Possibly but, one of the enduring criticisms Apple gets is how long they stick with certain designs with the Macbook Pros being a prominent example.

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t

@Desertlap: trillion dollar companies seem to weather the criticism.

@Tams: Apple has an iPhone bump, MS has its domino, Sammy was feeling left out. To quote Dr. StrangeLove, “We can’t have a mineshaft gap!”

At least this comentator addresses the lack of a pen silo in the Fold 4. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 leak unravels a familiar design | Digital Trends. Bravo!

BTW: It’s important not to discount engineering as a factor here either. For example with The Samsung S21 Ultra , the “bar” also acted as a heat sink for the sensors. So obviously they found a different way to accomplish the same thing with the S22 Ultra.

And it definitely brings to mind what we observed with the first “backlit” CCD image sensors in DSLR and mirrorless cameras. The improvement in image quality was so significant the companies had to use them, but the first batches had overheating problems, And Canon for instance, subtly redesigned their DLSRs. (they got slightly deeper, front to back) to allow for a different cooling system,.

And @Bronsky that continues to represent a challenge for pen silos as well

Give me an hour of CAD time and I will show them how. :vb-agree:
