OG (Original) MS Duo as an Android 12L Mini-Tablet

Not shameless, I was beginning to feel bad about it! The only thing that makes me feel less guilty is that Iā€™ve basically decided to get one myself as a reader / an OMG-this-is-cool-even-if-I-donā€™t-use-it device.

I am in! All my enabling backfired. Found an unlocked 256GB model for a little over $300, recent MS warranty replacement with half a year of MS Complete remaining.

My rationalizations (made up after buying :yum:)

  • itā€™s a gorgeous (secondary) device
  • Iā€™ll use it as an e-reader around the house
  • Iā€™ll use it as a media player on my many travels. Major benefit: built-in stand (the other screen). Other major benefit: convenient drag and drop of media from PC to the device (unlike the iPhone). And one more: my iPhone battery wonā€™t be drained when I land. :+1:t2:
  • compatible with my surface pens
  • compatible with all my chargers (except the iPhoneā€¦)
  • if this becomes my main travel media companion, I donā€™t need all that space on my iPhone. So think of the $200 savings when I buy my next iPhone! (pretty creative right?)

Looking forward to it!

How often do I have to keep playing this clip for you delusional rationalizersā€¦

Oh Iā€™m fully lusional. I am well aware that I donā€™t really need this device. But since I want it anyway, might as well come up with some arguments for getting it after the fact.

It was cheap and it satisfied some geek lust and thatā€™s all it was when I got mine. I surprised myself by gaining real reasons for having it after the fact. Itā€™s currently my most used device and I am dictating on it right at this moment.

Microsoftā€™s version of Android 12L looks pretty sweet!

Ugh, the Renaisser Raphael 520 has disappeared. This is the third or fourth time my Surface pen has needed replacement. Even though this Renaisser wasnā€™t doing great on the Duo it was better than my finger. :crying_cat_face:

I really donā€™t want to fork over the dough for a Slim Pen 2, even at the current discounted $95 on Amazon. So Iā€™m giving a different cheapie a try:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0B1CY438Q

$36 $24 (33% off). It seems way too good to be true at that price but the reviews sound genuine and positive. Weā€™ll see.

Iā€™m afraid Iā€™m just getting tiredā€¦

The Duo1 (unlocked 256gb) arrived this afternoon. It is a beautiful and amazingly crafted device (as we all know). In near mint condition (as best I can tell) and Seller included everything except the SIM slot tool (even the bumpers were in the box). I started setup, and it updated itself immediately to Android 12L, then everything went downhill for me for the next two hours. Trouble using my personal Microsoft account; couldnā€™t register with my Microsoft account (to see if there was any warranty); setting up my business email in Outlook just stays on a spinning circle; and my usual Android dislike bubbles to the surface (pun intended). Itā€™s just too much work, and Iā€™m too tired of the chase to drop a third operating system into my lifeā€¦

It goes back to the Seller tomorrowā€¦

Too bad the setup didnā€™t go smoothly. I plan to set up mine mostly for personal use and media, so less of a chance or running into issues, or so I hope!

Sorry to hear about your troubles. That must be frustrating. All similar setup things went smoothly for me except for trying to get iCloud mail to work in Outlook. But for some reason it worked after it sat for a day and I tried again. Weird, but oh so Microsoft. :man_shrugging:

Thanks! The one I ordered comes next week and if it turns out to be trash Iā€™ll return it and try your demo link.

Ted - I donā€™t know if it is Microsoft or Iā€™m just getting tired of the ā€œhuntā€ and frustration sets in rather quickly these days. I donā€™t think Microsoft makes it any easier in particular, but as i was waiting for verifications (the last of which never came for the setup of Outlook) I kept losing interest and wondering why I wanted to juggle FOUR operating systems (Windows, iOS, iPadOS, and now Android, or is that ā€œWindroidā€ which suspiciously rhymes withā€¦no, letā€™s not go there).

No, itā€™s (always) about me. What was I really going to do with another but different way to work with my files, take notes, and videoconference? How was this going to ā€œlighten the loadā€ much less make life any easier? I keep marveling at the simplicity of @Bronskyā€™s life with really only two devices (SG2 and Note 10) sharing the load. Add to that the problem I am still trapped in Appletraz for almost all my personal ā€œstuffā€ and I realized that the Duo1 was not going to be a mini-tablet solution but just anotherā€¦

Yeah I think thatā€™s a tough ask, using it as a full-blown PC across your work life. But using it as a sidekick for some casual reading or movie watching is an easy call.

I like the weight of my Kindle, but reading long web pages is easier on a device where you can scroll easily. The Duo might fill that gap. I like watching movies on my GBook2, but I donā€™t do that on a plane because itā€™s pretty hard to hide any non PG scenes from fellow passengers. The Duo is easier to use as a (more) private screen. So there are use cases where the Duo works for me.

Will I edit long word docs or PDFs on it? Probably not. But for more casual use I could see myself getting some mileage out of it.

SLIGHT detour:

Has anyone done a factory reset on their SDuo OG after getting Android 12L? Does it return to Android 9 or stay at 12L?

TIA.

This! The one thing that I was interested in with the Duo was remote videoconferencing, which I seem to be doing a lot these days. Conference calls appear to be out of vogue with the corporate types. I have to keep the Go2 with me at all times so I can zoom/conference on a dime. The phone just doesnā€™t give me a screen big enough to follow along with the engineers and their drawings.
