Brief comments on typical differences between Intel Core and Atom systems:

Atom based systems are typically $300-400 cheaper, are lightweight, have long battery life (8-10h or so), run cool, don’t need a fan, and support connected standby. On the downside, they come with Win8 32bit ‘basic’, are less powerful, have weaker graphics capabilities, typically (always?) use slower and smaller eMMC storage, hold only up to 2GB RAM, don’t support USB3, typically have low res screens and can’t output to external screens at as high resolution. They may also have more bugs to work out since the hardware is newer. Note : there are different Atom chip generations. The 2nd gen is capable handling Win 8 smoothly, but the 3rd gen performs a TON faster, so get that if you can.

Intel Core based systems are typically $300-400 more expensive, almost half a pound heavier, have 4-5h battery life (3rd gen, or 6-9h 4th gen), can run hot when pushed, have a fan and vents, and do not support connected standby. On the positive side, they come with up to Win8 Pro 64bit, are as powerful as many current desktop systems, have better graphics than the Atom systems, use fast SSD storage with more drive space, can hold 8GB or more RAM, typically have at least one USB3 port, often have 1080p screens, and I suspect they can output high resolution video. They will likely have fewer driver problems because the hardware is more mature. Note: 4th generation Intel Core i processors typically have similar computing power to 3rd gen versions, but their battery life can be over 50% longer under light use (browsing, Word doc editing, email, etc).
