Aside from the technical specifics, you’re pretty much describing a Samsung Galaxy Book — it kills me that Samsung got it so right, and then failed to continue in that vein, and I still despair of replacing mine.
Yes, it would be very tempting. I just want some Windows manufacturer to perfect the Magic Keyboard and make it for a 10 ish inch 3:2 Windows device. It’s probably an impossible dream because of the needed weight to make such a keyboard.
I went type cover because I wanted thin and lite, even if not perfect. FAR better than the bulky and heavy magic Keyboard design. I don’t see how you get away from that (bulky/heavy) in a detachable form factor otherwise.
Granted, the floppy detachable is much thinner/lighter. But if one finds it virtually unusable as do I and some others, and we end up pulling it off and using the OSK instead, it’s no different from a plain cover which is without the bulk and weight of the keys.
I guess I’m just not bothered by the weight of the MK when I’m using it. If it’s able to be my only device, MK + 11" IPP would actually not be all that heavy in my bag and very easy to carry around. And because of the magnets, the IPP is so easy just to pop off the MK for handheld use when I don’t need the keyboard. It’s just a matter of the pathetic OS for any real productivity. I would be perfectly happy if we could just get Windows on the 11" IPP with MK without changing anything else about the form factor. Granted, the pen tech would need to match Apple Pencil, but it doesn’t have to beat it.
Well, yes, it needs to be a Windows keyboard, not a Mac keyboard, but in principle.
Though, honestly, I just don’t need my portable device to be a full PC right now. I only use it for art and edit: writing, so the IPP is fine. While I drool for this magical magnetic device that I can quickly pull off my desktop dock and drop onto my magic keyboard (or MK alternative) and have it do all the things I want it to do in whatever mode I’m using it in, until I’m ready to upgrade my MBP, I won’t be able to justify buying it anyway. Hopefully when I am ready to upgrade, the market will finally produce it.
Well if it is a Surface than likely a Brydge keyboard would be made for it. (would be similar to the Surface Go Brydge keyboard)
I would not mind a Dell Venue 11 Pro like keyboard with build-in battery though.
I’m personally still not a fan of that design. I can’t tell you how much I love the magnetic nature of the Magic Keyboard. The simplicity of setting the IPP on and taking it off is divine. Apple really has a great thing going with it along with smart connectors. They would do well to expand upon it. A magnetic dock with smart connectors for a desktop setup with keyboard/mouse/monitor, a magic keyboard for on the go, and a magnetic cover for handheld, it’s so very easy to switch between without interrupting workflow at all. And this is coming from someone who generally dislikes everything Apple. But for a company who makes the most inconvenient software, some of their hardware is very on point.
Although I bought a Pro X to see what post-intel life may be like, 10" is still the sweet spot for a tablet. If this WOA works out and Microsloth finally updates the Go to ARM power, I will be back in a heartbeat.
@bronsky and @James - I agree 10-11" and 1lb is the sweet spot. I say 11" because I know they could shoehorn an 11" OLED in the same volume as the SG3. In fact I have been very serious - if Parallels could raise WOA on an iPad Pro 11, even without multi-monitor support, I’d be in within minutes.
